Volkswagen navigation maps and updates

Volkswagen navigation maps age along with the roads: new roundabouts and bypasses appear, and speed limits change. We update maps for RNS and MFD systems; a 12-month warranty is specified for maps.

How to tell that your Volkswagen navigation maps are outdated

Signs that indicate the maps may be outdated.

01

The navigation shows that I’m driving across fields

WhyThe map was created several years ago, and the new road or intersection does not yet exist on it.

Check it yourselfCheck the map version in the system settings menu and write it down.

What we doWe install the latest map set intended for your system.

02

Volkswagen navigation update – I don’t know which system I have

WhyThe name is often written on the radio panel or is visible when the system is switched on.

Check it yourselfTake a photo of the screen and write down the car’s year of manufacture.

What we doBased on an inspection, we identify the system and tell you whether we can update it.

03

The system asks to insert a different disc

WhyThe disc is scratched, worn, or does not match the system version.

Check it yourselfDo not use a damaged disc and do not clean it with solvents; contact the service point.

What we doWe provide a new map set and check that the system can read it.

04

Tiguan navigation does not detect the card

WhyThe card is not suitable for the system, is damaged, or the correct version has not been written to it.

Check it yourselfContact the service point if the card cannot be read.

What we doWe check which system is installed and prepare a suitable card.

05

The map of the required country is missing

WhyThe set is split across several discs or cards, and the wrong one has been inserted.

What we doWe select the set according to your travel destinations; for example, in the RNS-510 / 810 system the detailed map of Lithuania is on CD 2.

06

Can the RNS300 be updated

WhyThis system is not supported for our updates.

What we doWe do not update this system, so it is better to find this out before you come in.

What people get wrong about Volkswagen maps

  • Myth. The same map set fits every Volkswagen. In fact. The set depends on the system (RNS-310, RNS-510, etc.) and the car’s model year; some models may have several systems.
  • Myth. Phone navigation replaces the factory system. In fact. A phone is convenient, but the factory system works without the internet and is integrated into the instrument panel.
  • Myth. An old map only shows new roads incorrectly. In fact. Closed or changed road sections are also missed, so you may choose the wrong route.

Volkswagen navigation maps: what suits your system

The system is determined by the name on the screen or radio panel and the car’s year of manufacture. Some models may have several different systems, so „Tiguan navigation” has no single definitive answer.

Based on how the system reads data, we divide them as follows:

  • RNS-510, RNS-810, MFD3 – map DVD set (CD 1 and CD 2); CD 2 is the detailed map of Lithuania.
  • RNS-310 – runs from an SD card; the set consists of SD 1 and SD 2.
  • RNS-315 – maps are loaded onto the internal drive (HDD).
  • RNS MFD2 – Bora, Caddy, Golf, Jetta, Passat, Touareg, Touran, etc., manufactured 2003–2010.
  • Phaeton VDO NT and MCD / RNS2 – older systems, with maps split across many discs by country.

Take a photo of the screen showing the system name and note down the car’s year of manufacture – this will help us determine more quickly whether we can update your system.

A technician updates the car's navigation maps

Is it worth updating the maps or buying a new navigation unit

If the system works well and only the maps are out of date, updating the maps is usually enough, rather than replacing the entire unit. If the screen or reader itself is faulty, diagnostics are needed first.

For other car models, read the article Volkswagen Touareg technologies, and for the effects of cold and moisture – Volkswagen weak points.

What to bring to the service point

  • Your old map discs or SD card
  • The car’s year of manufacture and model
  • A photo or note with the system name
  • The system PIN code, if one is used
  • Your important addresses written down

What else Volkswagen owners ask

Volkswagen navigation update – can I do it myself?

Map files are stored on special discs or cards, and simple copying often does not work. We therefore recommend contacting a service point; the work comes with a warranty, and a 12-month warranty is specified for maps.

Will there be a detailed map of Lithuania?

Yes, for example, in the RNS-510 / 810 system on CD 2 and in the MFD2 set, Lithuania is marked as detailed. For other systems, we choose the set according to your system.

What should I do if my system is not on the list?

Call us or bring the equipment to our service point and tell us the car’s year and the system name – we will tell you whether we can update it.

Will the update erase my settings?

This depends on the system, so we recommend writing down your saved addresses before you come in.
